SWIFT SR2023 Upgrade & ISO 20022 Readiness

SWIFT SR2023 Upgrade and CBPR+ Migration Readiness for a Multi-Branch Bank

Sector: SWIFT & Payments

Excerpt: IBC Solutions managed the SR2023 SWIFT standards upgrade and ISO 20022 CBPR+ readiness programme for a multi-branch commercial bank, positioning the institution for the global shift to MX messaging ahead of the 2025 deadline.

The Challenge

The SWIFT SR2023 release marked a pivotal moment in the global payments landscape: the start of the CBPR+ (Cross-Border Payments and Reporting Plus) coexistence period, during which banks were required to begin supporting ISO 20022 MX messages alongside legacy MT messages. For our client — a multi-branch commercial bank with operations across several countries — the complexity was compounded by multiple core banking systems, fragmented SWIFT infrastructure, and a need to educate the operations team on a fundamentally different messaging paradigm.

The bank’s leadership recognised that SR2023 was not simply a routine annual upgrade; it was the beginning of a structural shift that required a strategic response.

Our Approach

IBC Solutions began by conducting an ISO 20022 readiness assessment across all of the bank’s SWIFT-connected systems and processes. We produced a gap analysis that mapped the bank’s current MT message flows against their MX equivalents (pacs.008, pacs.009, camt.054, etc.) and identified the data enrichment requirements — particularly the expanded remittance information and LEI fields that ISO 20022 mandates.

We then managed the SR2023 technical upgrade itself in parallel, ensuring the bank’s SWIFT Alliance infrastructure and core banking interfaces were updated, tested, and validated. A coexistence strategy was developed and documented, defining how the bank would handle inbound MX messages during the transition period while continuing to send MT messages to counterparties not yet migrated.

Correspondent bank relationships were reviewed and categorised by their ISO 20022 readiness status, and the bank’s operations team received structured training on the differences between MT and MX message formats and the operational implications for exception handling.

Results

  • SR2023 upgrade completed on schedule with full regression testing signed off across all message families
  • ISO 20022 CBPR+ coexistence strategy documented and operational, with the bank able to receive and process inbound pacs.008 and pacs.009 MX messages
  • Data enrichment gaps identified and remediation roadmap agreed with the core banking vendor
  • Correspondent bank readiness matrix produced, enabling the bank to proactively manage its transition timeline
  • Institution positioned ahead of the curve for the 2025 MT-to-MX migration deadline
